"Frozen 2" Binary Opposites and 5 Narrative Codes

The movie synopsis is Queen Elsa begins to hear a mysterious melodic voice calling to her. Unsettled, she answers it, thus awakening the elemental spirits and setting into motion a quest to restore an old injustice.

Premiere : November 7 2019

Genre: Musical Fantasy

Director: Chris Buck, Jenifer Lee

Hermeneutic Code

The hermeneutic code is when Elsa hears the mysterious voice calling her out to the night where at the end it leads her to the enchanted forest. "where is the source of the mysterious calling" "what are the intention of the calling"

Proairetic Code

The proairetic code that was used was when Arendelle suffers from some very strange misfortunes, Grand Pappie informs our heroes that the spirits are angered by an evil wrongdoing which has to be corrected. This is the main quest of the narrative that the characters have to take action on the quest.

Sementic Code

The sementic code used was where Olaf characteritcs are funny as he does puns a lot. The other sementic code used was Anna has the ability to release a typical ice super power which explain that she is different than ordinary human.

Cultural Code

The cultural code used was the formal clothing worn by Kristoff for Anna’s coronation at the end of the film. With our knowledge about royalty, the audience will recognise the character’s new status because his outfit consists of shiny black shoes, trousers, and jacket with gold detail where before Kristoff's new status he was wearing lousy shirt with poor color.

Symbolic Code

The symbolic code used was the antithesis between the development of time and the constancy of love between the main characters. The wind might be a bit colder, but their connection with each other would never fade

All Media Theories

Binary Opposites - Levi Strauss
We all understand the world in terms of opposites. It is the conflict of these opposites that drives a narrative forward. The winner is often the ideology of the producer.

Cultivation Theory - George Gerbner
Exposure to media over time will reinforce existing ideologies. People will choose to consume media that already agrees with their opinions.

Desensitisation (Compassion Fatigue)
Occurs when an audience is repeatedly exposed to shocking or violent content. They become less compassionate about what they are seeing anbd the events become 'normalised'

Feminine Discourses - Van Zoonen
Your sex is biological, your gender is behavioural. Van Zoonin’s theory suggests that gender is constructed by the media through stereotypes and portrayal of gender roles. The media believes this reflects dominant societal values (men in charge). However, this is unfair because the media is run by men. Constant negative portrayals of women in the media reinforces a patriarchy; Society ran by men, for men. With women being oppressed as a result.

Five Narrative Codes - Roland Barthes
- Hermeneutic Codes - Enigma, deliberately withheld information to create mystery
- Proairetic Codes - Action, plot points that move the story forward
- Semantic Codes - Connotation, Codes that have a deeper meaning than their denotation
- Symbolic Codes - Thematic or structural devices. Aided by Binary Opposites.
- Cultural Codes - Prior knowledge to help the reader decode all of the signifiers correctly.

Genre Theory - Steve Neale
Genre is a matter of repetition and difference. A text must conform to the conventions enough to be recognisable, yet subvert them enough to be different and interesting. This is to:
1) Provide pleasure and meaning for the audience.
2) Offset against financial risk
Genre is useful because it gives the audience expectations, provides a template for the producers, and provides distributors with an audience to target.

Hypodermic Needle Theory
Not really considered a working theory any more. The belief that the audience is a sponge, and accepts any message from the media without any question.

Male Gaze Theory - Laura Mulvey
Women are passive in a narrative, and their only purpose is as an object for the male characters to look upon. This is shown through camerawork (angles, clos-ups, slow movement), Mis-en-scene (revealing clothing), eye contact (sometimes looking at the camera directly)

Narrative Theory - Todorov
All linear narratives follow the same structure: Equilibrium, Disruptionm, Recognition, Attempt at repair, New equilibrium.
Postmodernism - Baudrillard
Note: Baudrillard did not create the theory of postmodernism, he just added to it. He suggests that everything is just a copy of a copy of a copy. Media has moved from reality, to heightened reality, finally to hyper reality. This hyper reality is a simulation where it is difficult to determine what is real and what is fake.. Baudrillard also thinks that people would prefer to live in this simulation because it is better that our real lives. He also says that this simulation is full of simulacra, a representation of reality that no longer exists or never existed in the first place.
Eg. An Instagram model presents themselves in a certain way, however their real life might not be anything like the one depicted on their account. This account, and the photos/videos on it, are simulacra, a representation of reality that does not exist.

Reception Theory - Stuart Hall
Media producers encode their texts with meaning. The audience decodes the text to understand meaning. However, all audiences are different and so receive the message differently. (Preferred, Negotiated, Oppositional)

Representation Theory - Stuart Hall
Media does not reflect meaning, media creates meaning.
Stereotypes are used as a result of a lack of diversity in production.
Meaning is created by hegemonic groups (rich, white, straight men) in order to maintain power.
Social Learning - Albert Bandura
After consuming media, the audience might go on to repeat what they have seen (in particular violent acts). Bandura admitted that there may be other processes that contribute to behaviour)

Two-Step Flow
A development of the hypodermic needle theory. The media is untrustworthy, so the audience has their interpretation formed by opinion leaders (trusted members of the community. Think celebrities, influencers)

Uses and Gratification - Bulmer & Katz
The audience is actively using the media to satisfy some of their base social needs;
- Diversion - A form of escapism from the stresses of everyday life
- Personal Identity - The media supplies us with role models
- Social Relationships - 1) People make connections with people they see on screen. 2) People can build their own social relationships
- Surveillance - People use the media to inform themselves about the world around them.

Radio Project - Critical self-reflection

1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Conventions are the desired things that audiences expect to see in the media product. Before making the poster I did a detailed research to find out my generic conventions. Our podcast is based on our research through our self report. The first convention we used is . We use hard drop beat jingle in the introduction to triggers audience physiological condition. Our podcast represents the typical stereotypes and stigma by the songs we played based on the data from the Tik Tok on most used songs in majority user's contents. Furthermore, our radio show embraces conventions by using songs that are popular in the current time. Hit charting songs that resonate deeply with most teenagers worldwide are played in our radio show, similar to a lot of other radio shows of similar genre, as to attract an audience, we must use what said audience enjoys to reel them in. In this case being music from artists and bands like The Arctic Monkeys, Childish Gambino, The Neighborhood, Etc. Furthermore, we conformed to norms in the industry by speaking English as to expand the reach of our radio show to more people. The presenter's personality are easy going, talkative and sharing positive vibes. The presenters are also the popular school teenager where this will make audiences will be attracted to the show. This is based on gratification theory - surveilliance where people are curious about their perspective and they will be interested in knowing their comments for an additional information. Furthermore, our radio show consists of 2 male, 16 year old, Indonesian hosts. This is representative of the high school student audience and also the male and Indonesian audience. We did this as representation theory believes that audiences will be more inclined to consume media where they feel represented. However, it may not be as attractive to females as they may rather want to listen to a radio show which utilizes female hosts instead, as they may find it more appealing/relatable. Additionally, when it comes to socio-economic status, i believe people of lower socio-economic background/people in the lower class may not be attracted to listen to our radio show. This is because our school is a private, international school which has a tuition fee high above the Indonesian average. This means that people of the lower class may not be so interested in listening about the lives of teenage high school students that to them may be "our of touch". Thus, I believe that our radio show represents and appeals to mainly people of the upper-middle to higher class. (credit to Maxi)

2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

I believe our radio show would be a perfect pick to be aired by our schools broadcasting department. This is because our target audience is incredibly niche, as only students from our school would understand the gossip or even the news that's currently happening. To put it simply, people from other schools, cities, countries, etc, would most likely be confused/not be interested in the affairs of people that they do not care about. Thus, I believe our radio show would best be broadcasted in our school. Our radio would best be played in the afternoon after students had finished their classes/lessons as to give them an opportunity to relax and cool down after a long day and be entertained. Other than being broadcasted by school however, we could also incorporate forms of new media like YouTube. This meaning that we could upload the radio segment/show to YouTube so that the audience can re-listen to the show if they missed it, or just whenever they please.

As mentioned previously, our radio show targets and appeals to the demographic of teenage high school students (aged 15-18 primarily) and may appeal to any gender. This is mainly due to our gossip segment that will most likely be enjoyed by people of that age range, as adults may not be as interested in listening to gossip and rumors as they have their own lives to deal with and do not have the time to waste by listening to teen gossip. However, when it comes to race and ethnicity, we most likely appeal to Indonesians specifically, instead of people outside of the country, as events discussed will mainly consist of events happening in Indonesia.

From Katz’s and Blumer’s Usage and Gratification Theory (UGT), I would state that this radio show falls under the category of "diversion", "surveillance" and "social relationships", as audiences are most likely tune into and listen to the radio for leisure/to be entertained. This is achieved by the gossip segment of our radio show, as well as the music we play as people listen to gossip about others as a form of excitement, and music also serves as a form of diversion from everyday life for most people. However, at the same time people may also want to know about current affairs and want to be kept in the loop of things, thus it may also fall under the surveillance category, as our news segment and gossip segment allow our listeners to keep up with what's going on at school. Additionally, uploading the radio show to YouTube also allows audiences to leave comments, share it to their friends, and more, which may enhance their social relationships, adding yet another reason for audiences to consume our radio show. 3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

I would definitely say that my production skills have developed throughout the course. This is because I have learned how to manage and work with new software such as Audacity, and Adobe Illustrator. Also, I feel as though I have become more confident with software such as Illustrator as I now know how to complete other changes in the application like copying a section from one area of the image to then pasting over onto another, which I had to use in developing our podcast logo. Illustrator has extremely numerous features for image editing software. Some of its powerful tools like photo gradient curve and rendering allow me to not only adjust brightness in pictures but also add special effects. Audacity I also learned about how to manipulate the podcast tools such as the mixer and I am confident that my knowledge about the podcast production have improved. The microphone was the main tool to record the presenters conversation. Premier pro also has extremely countless useful features where you can manipulate every scene even the audio as you wish. For this project I only focuses on the audio timeline since this is a podcast project and Premier pro is the software that I master the most. I had problem in using others software such as Audacity as I would have to adapt into their UX/UI design.

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware, and online – in this project?

For our project, I used a lot of different software. One of the main software that premier pro on manipulating and developing the audio so the podcast will be easy hearing. To create the radio show my team and I used various different software's and hardware's to develop a well furbished final product. To record Timo and Maxi's lines, They used their studios at home, using a Scarlett 2i2 Studio Mic and BM800 Condenser Microphone respectively. Then they entered a Discord call (discord is an online application that allows you to chat, call, and videocall with others, similar to Skype), in which Timo recorded our lines using the OBS recording software. He then uploaded all recordings to a google drive where Maxi downloaded them and put them into Adobe Premiere Pro, where I edited all the recordings together. I was able to download the songs used from a website called soundlouder.com which allowed to download songs from the Spotify app to mp3 files. The jingles were made by Satria using the application Bandlab, using recordings made from his phone. While I created the logo using Adobe Photoshop. All in all, I feel like technology has helped us greatly in creating our project as editing, recording, and sharing files and ideas had become far easier. Using discord helped us especially the presenter Maxi and Timo as we did not have to meet at a location to record, as we could just do it online. Adobe Premiere Pro also helped in editing as it streamlined the process and made everything very simple, compared to if I had to use other editing software's.

Radio Project - Logo Research and Development

These are the logo that I remember the most until today which I could consider this is my favorite type of logo. The logos are all from 21 century whereas you can see the logos are simple which are memorable so audiences are most likely to be able to recall if they saw the logo again. The logo that I like the most is the Gojek logo where even though its only 1 color toned - green, the simple shape where Nadiem Makarim said that the Gojek logo symbolizes solving. The philosophy behind the logo is Gojek provides any solutions through services provided. The logo if you look closely looks like the search button

Trial and Error:

This is part of the first draft where I tried to sketch the logo for the RegentsX radio show. I especially like the logo that tried to use an italic font, but it may not accurately represent the alternative pop music we play, as it implies a "classic" or "classy" type of music. I think the Rx logo with the X under the R is the best logo especially using strong font because it best reflects our radio genre. This is the part where its my time to shine

Logo Development:

Final Logo:

Me and my group decided to choose the middle one because the logo shows radio company or podcast show. The first logo that I made give the cosmetic and beauty logo look with the elegant italic look font that i used. The final logo really give strong branding as the font is stiff. I make it little bit classic with combining the microphone element and the 'R' on the logo.
