Component 3 - Music Video Research

Here is the research for my music video, in depth review for our music video development

Wetsuit - (Instagram video)

The late 2000's music video visualise the atmosphere on how the festival was fire. The music video reveals lots of dumps picture on how the audience back there shows enthusiast during The Vaccines's concert. The scenes were shown with brightful colour to support the idea of audience in the music video being excited during the music festival. Most of the entire music video was filled with pictures of joyous audience and the editor make the music video in slideshow format meaning the editor intended for audience to feel what the audience in the festival feel from each portraits. The targeted audience will be young teenagers as the music video confront lots of the stereotypes of young teenagers of being crazy, careless, messy and madness. I don't like the idea for only using slide show throughout the music video as audience perceive and judge things in motion unlike in Wetsuits, pictures were the only think that we see, which makes audiences feel boredom.

Die For You - The Weeknd

The song Die For You was written by Abel Tesfaye or the stage name The Weeknd. The song was released in 25 November 2021 under the Label  XO Republic. The music video director was Christian Bresauler.

Media Language

The song depicts someone's desire to do great lengths and even sacrifice themself for the person they devoted to. The music video opens with showing the setting of hallway where the lighting there was kept on blinking on and off as this emphasizing the sense of emergency. The opening scene in the hallway of restricted lab was punctuates on a participant running away as we can hear the heavy breathing echoing that adds tension and intrigue. This scene was inspired by the reference of Stranger Things on the lab where one of the participant known as Eleven ran away in the TV show where this will help the audiences the type of narrative they are watching. The other scene portrays a young ordinary woman playing with her console game suddenly turn away from her game as she encounters suspicious sound from the bark which caught her attention. She then took a look at the bark in her backyard and she found out the Boy who were running away from the government from the first scene. She end up rescuing him. Then the pair end up fell for each other as the stars from the wallpaper become alive as it glows in the dark and revolves around them and the lights start shuttering. This connotates how powerful love can be. Another scene of flashback where when the Boy was captivated the Boy can use his telekinesis to move a can of coke. To the present, when their love stop to bloom as the black mask patriots and the government interrupt them as they are trying to bring the boy back to experiment. They forget about the young boy telekinetic super power which he can take down them easily even into the sky while holding a glowing red cross which illustrate the boy's superhuman ability. This scene indirectly punctuates the idea of the boy willingness especially in connecting the lyric "The distance and time between us will never change my mind". The music video also have an intertextuality to Wanda Vision as the character Wanda could outsmart their enemy so easily with telekinetic.

Representation

The music video revolves around the young boy with superpower who is being captured by the government and ending up ran away from the faculty. As the boy has superhuman ability such as telekinetic would represent the genre of sci-fiction narrative. The boy also illustrated as a threat from the government point of view as they always try to lock him. The young woman with ordinary features with more general American family style also represents the American society as we see parents will watch their favourite show on TV until they fell a sleep after off from their works. The scientists and the government can be represented as threat as the Boy was running away from them. The way the Gas Mask Clad government was wearing black suits which potentially represents fearless, thoughtless, and demonic and using gas mask will make the character appear more mysterious.

Audience

As the music video combined with the intertextuality of Stranger Things the music video will most likely to be appealing to target audience who had watched Stranger Things will have a sense of nostalgia because of what they will see while watching this music video will engaged the audience. As the song theme generally talks about love and devotion the audience who is in the same shoes at the stage of love until lead them to the point where they are willing to do anything for the loved one will be appealing to the audience. More specifically the target audience will be from teens to early 30's as this group of age are more likely to be connected to theme of love, price to pay to be into the relationships. Audience who have a daily life of scrolling TikTok may have the interest to watch the actual music video as the song Die For You is commonly uses in the content user generated.

Industry

The elements of cinematography that captures the theme commitment and devotion really satisfying even there aren't any filming technique that stands out. The editing especially on colour tone really shapes what the audience should feel and there is one 3D animation editing on the glow in the dark stars. The music video was released in the famous user generated content Youtube as they already have myriads of users which contributes the music video to reach global audience.

Sanctuary - Joji

The song Sanctuary is a Lofi/R&B/soul, written by Japanese singer-songwriter Joji. The song was released in 14 June 2019 under the label 88rising. The music video director is Eoin Glaister.

Media Language

The song itself depict expression on how Joji desires her so much until he refers her as sanctuary or safe place. The music video embark on captivating narrative the begins with fighting scene between Captain Joji and the One-eyed villain. A medium shot used to plot Joji's and the crew's boredom and monotony as they got no purpose for living anymore as they are no more jobs to be done or involves in thrilling/exciting adventure can be done and this was shown by a slow push in and long shots to show emptiness. The camera work primarily centers around Captain Joji who is in depressed state missing the good old days. Flashbacks where shown on the days they were having fun fighting the nemesis, having fun with another. One of the crew took a long stares at the spoon which brings him back to the memory of their long time villain they used to fight with. Then he took of his eyes with a spoon and throw it to the cereal as he done this in other to bring new dopamine/enjoyment to the crew. The guy ending up betraying the crews and captain Joji by shooting one of the crew and leaved the spaceship. The pivotal part is where the crews kept on holding back his tears as he fires the tears for his old crew member. The ship's crew suddenly started to become more alive and the music video ends with Joji sitting on his captain seat. The video is applying the metaphor that when you are in relationship where the two of you are still enjoying things the love grows more but when the two of you are started at getting bored on things that giving both of you pleasure you fall into boredom. They are trying to look for ways to enhance the boredom and loneliness. This music video also explain that one person should initiavely restart the relationship using different ways. Joji explain that he found comfort being with that one person but they don't have to be commitment. This is supported by the lyric "if you've been waiting for falling in love, babe you don't have to wait on me" and "cause I've been aiming Heaven above but an angel ain't what I need".

Representation

The song uses various representation such as captain Joji being the center of the music video as this will highlight his role in the framework as protagonist. Captain Joji represents depression and gloominess as we can see by his face expression for almost throughout the music video. The crews were wearing a brown jump suit which connotes the paleness and monotony. The spaceship flying in no direction in the gigantic borderless space represents the purposeless of the crews. The music video also represents the boredom stage in relationship with the analogy of the very clueless spaceship. The music video has a style of 1960's style sci-fi adventure where it gives the feeling of high schooler's film project where this might represents the singer's goofiness but with a very metaphorical hidden meaning this would represents Joji inside feelings.

Audience

As the music video used the reference from either Star Wars or Star Trek as the baseline of the framework where audience's where this music video will be appealing for Star Wars fans or Star Trek fans as they are able to be familiar with the setting in Sanctuary music video hence recalling some important convections in Star Wars or Star Trek. More over as Joji is under the Label 88rising as 88rising company is well known for their underrated Asia/Asian artist/song writer where as 88rising release the music video the Asia demographics will be appealed to the music video as Joji is Japanese song writer. The main target audience would be to teenagers to late 30's as they are more likely to experience the tedious and flat stage in relationship where it's not exciting as it used to be in the beginning of relationship.

Industry

The editing and filming is in the music video is very confront the convections of pop musical video. The stands out element in the music video is the concept of the Star Trek settings where this may requires properties that represents space ship theme and some green screen to creates the dark space settings. A very simple CGI like the 1960's sci-fi adventure more is used to create the spaceship. The video seems to be using zero budget as they used the funny rubber costumes and toy spaceships. The video was upload in Youtube under 88rising label hence the framework would most likely to gain recognition more easier as the 88rising has a huge subscribers thus making the content easier to distribute to global audiences.

Cool With You - New Jeans
(watch both so you will understand the storyline)

The song Cool With You is a Korean Pop, written by Danielle Marsh (one of New Jeans Member). The song was released in July 21 2023 under the Label Ador. The music video director was Shin Wooseok.

The song Cool With You music video heavily rely on narrative. The song itself  explores the expression of how emotional and hooked someone can be when they are in love as life is filled with joy. The music video picturize this by using the reference of the well-known Greek story - Cupid and Psyche, a story about forbidden love between God and Human. Basically in the reference Cupid is the God of Love, meaning everywhere she pass by she could make two strangers whom they never met end up falling in love. This reference was evidently shown by the first scene in the MV where there was a strangers that seeing each other for the first time. After Hoyeon exit the elevator the two strangers end up kissing each other and become lovers. Hoyeon acts as cupid in this mv has she connects people's heart by giving a quick glance. The music video targets audience on Hoyeon's fan as her she gained more fans after her TV show "Squid Game" become widely viral. According to Fandom Theory audiences are more likely to be actively engaged to their role model's new media texts. In the Psyche and Cupid painting showcase Hoyeon stares at the painting as the painting caught her attention as she felt longing.

A long shot was used to show the parallel of the narrative in the MV and the actual Greek story as Maicol was facing at Psyche who is sleeping, a human who is unaware to be loved by god while Ho Yeon stands in front of cupid, the god desires the one he loves in secret but can't be seen by the one he loved the most. The moment she laid eyes on Maicol, the mortal who act as psyche. Many complex medium shots are used to visualize Hoyeon desire's in following Maicol but her presence for being invisible inhibit at the Maicol to knew her feelings as Maicol didn't feel annoyed such as in the train, sidewalk, and even even in his room while Maicol was sleeping and Hoyeon crawl into the men. One pivotal point to prove her invisibility by playing with the mise-en-scene of mirror as she can't see her reflection in the mirror while the man whose sleeping can still be seen by naked eyes. There were powerful scene where she remove her black dress symbolize of leaving her immortality and this also symbolize the lose of her power. The transformation was punctuated by she could encounter the rain and she was shown by high camera angle as this can make audience notice that she's no longer powerful or the God. A close shot used to show that she's very cheerful as it's the first time we see her smiling even embracing the rain. The two can enjoy moments of happiness and for once she finally experience it. Moving to another scene where the two wave at each other across the street, a sinister man and he took a quick glance at Hoyeon's lover similar to her glance from before. She became invisible again. The New Jeans (girls in white) act as a bridge between human and god as they also observe Hoyeon's action through all the scenes. Cool With You music video portrays the lyrics of the singer's excitement of her feelings to someone as it's unbearable as the feelings lead them to the point they are willing to do anything to become together with their loved one. In this Music Video Hoyeon sacrifice her duty and immortality in other to become with her loved one. The base of common theme forbidden love allows audience who gone through forbidden love relatable. The concept of using reference from Greek Stories can served a fresh idea to represent the idea of falling in love and obsession with anti-mainstream approaches.

As Niki's boyfriend danced by himself Niki looked up and the camera moved to show the Airplane flying away from her which symbolize Her boyfriend is not here anymore. The scene where medium shot with a slow dolly in from the back of her car where we can see from outside there is only one figure in the car which she's driving alone and then transitioned to Niki hanging out with her besties. During the girl meet up Niki got reminded about her boyfriend as the place brought memories alive. There were scenes that he is in the middle of the city with an overwhelming effects of green explosions and lighting, a green laser eye, the butterflies and lighting beam from his hand may represents how chaotic his mind and the insight of people with Bipolar type 1 as the effects is very overwhelming. Ian singing scene while the colours just changed over and over as this make audience lost in colour. Ian using gun to shooting, explosion, fire in his room and the annotation insanity just appear.
