Postmodernism explores the ideas and features that depicts the transformation of media in this modern age. The features are satire, hyper reality, simulacra, ETC. These elements creates the definition of post modernism. In this essay, I will analyse the media text She-Hulk and its stands out post modernism features
The She Hulk series is media text that incorporates features of postmodernism. The TV shows highlights the characters self reflexivity as there is no blur line between superhero world and real world. Moreover we can see the character always maintain a communication with real audiences, creating a playful and connection as she always keep acknowledging her existence in the fictional superhero realm. The media text it self contains a satire even She-Hulk satires it's own production, making about producing TV series or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A social commentary such as humour to comment on social or cultural issues. More over since She-Hulk is combining the role of superhero and lawyers the show can shift the general convections of laws and legal movie genre. The artificial intelligence bot known as K.E.V.I.N was introduced as the author of marvel or who wrote the narrative line for She-Hulk. The show it self uses the binary opposites of Human vs Robot (author) to create the conflict where back then the binary opposites used in superhero movies in the beginning were commonly superhero vs society, superhero vs self, and superhero vs No God. Another features in the show is hyper reality as the character Jennifer keep on moving back and forth to reality and the fictional settings which making the audiences hard to distinguish between which one is reality and artificial.
For media texts to be considered as postmodern text, according to Baudrillard's idea media text will be categorized as postmodern when the text involve applying hyper reality. Hyper reality is when media represents actual things with signs and symbols where these signs and symbols bear no correlation and completely false compared to actual things, the concept on signs and symbols that replacing the actual things defined as simulacra. These simulacras are commonly seen in movies among others taking off the pin grenade with only biting it in action movies but in reality it will cause your teeth to bleed. This symbols and signs steers audience view on certain things which create them hard to distinguish the boundary on which one is simulation or the actual reality. Heightened reality is one of the features that also shapes hyper reality where heightened reality is an exaggerated version of reality where these artificial feature can be distinguish between the genuine. The example for hyper reality would be the the documentary series American Vandal where these scripted narrative line on the mystery on who is the vandalizers that committed the his action spraying dicks graffiti on his teachers car. This documentary is a satire on true crime documentary by applying the convections of crime documentary such as the intense interview scenes, CCTV footage, and the investigation scenes. Audience may not realize that the documentary is actual a mockumentary. The portrayal of high school vandalism presented in a true crime documentary format creates blurring of the lines between reality and parody as audiences become so convince until they may find it hard to distinguish which one is real or not hence makes it a prime example of hyperreality in postmodern media. The humour in the show lies in the ability to mimic a true crime documentary so convicingly that leads to absurdity. The example for heightened reality would be the In The Name of God: Holy Betrayal. Where audience can differentiate whether the interview was sincere. Some audience may enjoy the satire used in the media as it could be entertaining for some demographic, while others may find it disorienting or even boring.
One of the potential drawbacks of postmodernism, especially exemplified by hyperreality, is that it can lead to a feeling of disconnection from reality. When we become immersed in artificial and simulation, we risk losing touch with the authentic, tangible aspects of our lives, as Baudrillard cautioned. Postmodern media challenges our understanding of reality, forcing us to question what is real and what is simulated, and although this may make us think But it can also make us disoriented, even destabilizing.
- add critique in the american vandal example, why is it an example of hyper reality, what is fake here? why did they parody true crime documentary. Why those features make it a post modern text. Tie in the features to the view of Baudrillard you provided. Although features included, emphasize whether audience like/dislike the text. Talk about the drawback of the postmodernism theory as a result of the text you brought out.
- It's not clear on the definition of hyper reality and simulacra, break up the sentence.
